Setting

The ring setting is the mounting which holds the diamond in place. Most rings have 4 or 6 prongs. With 4 prongs, more of the diamond can be seen. 6 prongs holds the diamond in tighter and is of higher quality, resulting in a higher price for the overall ring. Tiffany's suggests to never build your own engagement ring, because this can effect the quality of the setting. The ring setting should always match the metal of the ring band. For example, if your ring band is platinum, make sure the ring setting is also platinum. Visit Tiffany's to see an upclose picture of a ring setting and to see a picture of one prong Tiffany's also is the place. Also, check for prong flaws. These occur when the setting is placed crooked on top of the band, the prongs do not touch the stone (and are not holding the diamond in place), and prong burrs (when extra metal is left on the prong).

my dad has designed every major ring that he or my mom has purchased, and never had any problems with them. i think tiffany's is just trying to take more of my money than it already has...and it has a lot!

Tiffany's has none of my money and hopefully never will. I don't like to pay huge for names which is basically what you're doing. Michelle, how likely is it that the stone will fall out of the ring during everyday usage?

i was wondering the same thing as chris...does the 6 prongs instead of 4 make it less likely?

I remember one time when I was little my mom's diamond fell out of the setting and we had to search all over the house to find it. Luckily I was at the age where looking for things was fun. Anyways, hers is a 4 prong setting, so I dont know if it really makes a difference.

i saw that magician david blaine (sp?) pull a diamond out of a woman's ring with his teeth, put it in his mouth, and it came out of his eye and then put it back in her ring-no joke. can you pull a diamond out of a ring and then put it back with no tools?

Thanks for your advice on diamond earrings. I have been looking all over the web for a really nice pair of diamond earrings and had a hard time finding a site that had a really unique selection. I finally found a site that has a good selection of rings. It is Lussori. I also tried Tiffany’s Web Site Tiffany but it was really hard to navigate.

If I wanted to get a .55 carat diamond ring from Tiffany's, what price range should I expect?

Hey - I was curious if you know the answer to this... How much should I expect a Tiffany Engagement ring to cost with the specs of solitare, .55 carat diamond?

    tsdfilms@yahoo.com

    I need to know, thanks!

I did a little research - about %10 - %20 of the cost of the ring is usually the setting. You can find 18k gold or platinum solitaire settings starting at $250, more expensive settings with side stones can cost $500 - $2000.

When it comes to the price i would first look for the nicest diamond i can get for my budget, saving on the center stone is very important. A good place to start your search is blueminer, they offer loose diamonds price comparison.
